Freezing tunnels at the fishing port of Dakar

Four blast freezing tunnels of about 5 tonnes for a fishing company in Senegal

Design, supply and installation of four high-performance freezing tunnels for a leading fishing company based at the fishing port of Dakar, Senegal, a loyal client who has trusted Afric Froid again. Each tunnel freezes about 5,000 kg of fish and seafood per cycle, from +5 °C to −18 °C at the core, with a design outdoor temperature of 38 °C.

Address

Fishing port of Dakar, Senegal

Scope of work

Design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning.

Sector

Fishing – Seafood

Temperature

−18 °C at the core (air at −38 °C)

The solution delivered

Context and client needs To export high-quality fish and seafood, the client needed to freeze large volumes quickly, right after landing at the fishing port of Dakar. The installation had to keep its performance in high heat and during peak periods, meet the health requirements of export markets and keep energy consumption under control.

What we did AFRIC FROID designed, supplied and installed four freezing tunnels, sized from the real site conditions: products entering at +5 °C, a target core temperature of −18 °C, supply air at −38 °C and a design ambient temperature of 38 °C. Each tunnel handles about 5,000 kg per cycle, in 8 to 12 hours depending on the product. The refrigeration units were prepared in our workshops and shipped by container to Dakar. Project highlights

What was the client’s challenge?

Freezing large volumes of fish quickly as soon as they are landed, for export, despite the Dakar heat and major peaks in activity.

What solution was proposed?

Four freezing tunnels of about 5 tonnes each, designed for fast, even freezing, with refrigeration units sized for 38 °C ambient.

What are the benefits of this installation?

Fast freezing that preserves the texture and quality of the fish, a stable temperature throughout the cycle, controlled energy consumption and capacity suited to export volumes.
