Cold store for fruit and vegetables

An industrial refrigeration solution for preserving and storing fresh produce

A complete refrigeration installation for a warehouse storing a variety of fruit and vegetables, with 16 chilled cold rooms of 70 tonnes each (a total capacity of 1,120 tonnes) and a work area air-conditioned through textile ducts. The solution was designed for precise temperature control, preserving product quality and maintaining the cold chain across the warehouse.

Background and client needs

For a new cold store for fruit and vegetables, the client needed a high-performance installation to keep large quantities of fresh produce at stable, controlled temperatures. The project includes 16 chilled cold rooms of 70 tonnes, a total capacity of 1,120 tonnes, with constraints from frequent product movements, door openings and heat-load variations.

The installation also had to provide suitable ambient conditions in the work area for staff comfort and handling operations. FRIGO INDUS was therefore asked to design a complete, reliable refrigeration solution suited to the warehouse’s operating conditions.

Our work

FRIGO INDUS carried out the technical study, heat-load calculations, sizing and design of the installation. Our work included the supply and installation of 16 chilled cold rooms of 70 tonnes, with refrigeration equipment, accessories, insulated panels, and refrigeration and electrical connections.

FRIGO INDUS also air-conditioned the work area using textile ducts, for even air distribution and conditions suited to handling operations. The work was completed with assembly, commissioning, testing, adjustment and optimisation to ensure performance and reliability.

Project highlights

What was the client's challenge?

The client needed a refrigeration installation able to store 1,120 tonnes of fruit and vegetables at stable temperatures suited to fresh produce. It had to absorb load variations from incoming products, frequent door openings and air infiltration, while distributing cold evenly in every room.

The project also required suitable working conditions in the handling area, with even air distribution for staff comfort and the site’s operating constraints.

What solution was proposed?

FRIGO INDUS designed a complete industrial refrigeration solution with 16 chilled cold rooms of 70 tonnes each, a total capacity of 1,120 tonnes. The installations were sized from heat-load calculations and the specific storage conditions of fruit and vegetables to ensure stable temperatures and optimal preservation.

The work area was also fitted with air conditioning through textile ducts, providing even air distribution and conditions suited to handling.

What are the benefits of this installation?

This installation provides a large storage capacity of 1,120 tonnes with precise, stable control of storage temperatures. The design of the rooms offers great operational flexibility and adapts to the heat-load variations of the warehouse’s activity.

The solution helps preserve the freshness and quality of fresh produce, maintain the cold chain and ensure reliable continuous industrial operation. Air conditioning of the work area through textile ducts also distributes air evenly and improves working conditions for staff.
