Cold Rooms in Burkina Faso
Afric Froid in Burkina Faso
In 2026, Afric Froid built a cold store with three chilled cold rooms in Ouahigouya, in northern Burkina Faso, to store table and seed potatoes, with a total capacity of 3,000 tonnes.
The project was designed, sized, supplied, installed and commissioned by Afric Froid’s engineering office and installation teams from January to May 2026, with after-sales service following the installation once it was up and running.
Key figures
- 3,000 tonnes of potatoes
- 3 chilled cold rooms
- +2 to +6 °C and 90% relative humidity
- 40 to 45 °C outside in summer
- 5 months on site
Dimensions, temperatures, products: in 2 minutes, our calculator estimates the cooling capacity, the recommended panel thickness and the electricity consumption.
Our project in Burkina Faso

Potato cold store – Ouahigouya
Three chilled cold rooms controlled between +2 and +6 °C, with 90% humidity so the tubers do not dry out. Products come in at 25 °C and the temperature is lowered by about 1 °C per day. Storage density is 250 to 300 kg/m³. On site from January to May 2026.
Two propane slaughterhouses in Ouagadougou, with GIZ
With GIZ’s Proklima programme, Afric Froid has also equipped two slaughterhouses in Ouagadougou with propane (R290), a natural refrigerant with near-zero global warming potential. Under the same programme, we installed solar cold rooms in Kayes, Mali.
- Public slaughterhouse (about 40 carcasses, close to 4 t a day): two identical 7.2 × 3.2 × 2.6 m cold rooms (59.9 m³), 150 mm panels, kept between +0.5 and +1.5 °C for hanging carcasses, each with its own R290 monoblock of about 4 kW, and a cube ice machine.
- Private slaughterhouse (up to 12,000 kg of meat a day): a carcass-chilling room and a cold room connected to a centralised R290 glycol chiller, with two Bock HGX56e/995-4 HC semi-hermetic compressors and a Danfoss plate heat exchanger, for 50 + 15 kW of installed capacity. The evaporators are defrosted with warm glycol, heated by heat recovered from the compressor discharge, instead of electric heaters.
What we build in Burkina Faso
- Cold rooms and cold stores for fruit and vegetables and potatoes.
- Frozen cold rooms for meat, poultry and fish.
- Freezing tunnels and ice plants.
- Insulated panels and cold room doors.
- Solar cold rooms for sites far from the power grid.
Designed for the Sahel climate
In Ouahigouya, outdoor temperatures regularly reach 40 to 45 °C. Each installation is calculated from these real site conditions: refrigeration units sized for heat peaks, reinforced insulation in the cold rooms to keep energy use down, and a step-by-step temperature pull-down so products are stored without weight loss.
For sites without a reliable power supply, Afric Froid has also supplied containerised solar cold rooms to farming cooperatives in Ethiopia (see this project).
