Cold Rooms in Mali
Afric Froid in Mali
In 2025, Afric Froid installed two chilled cold rooms using propane (R290) and a flake ice machine, powered by a solar system, in the Kayes region for GIZ. They serve a cooperative that packs and sells vegetables and fish.
The site was accepted without reservation on 30 June 2025, after commissioning tests and user training. Afric Froid’s after-sales service has been following the installation since.
Key figures
- 2 R290 cold rooms
- 85 m³ of chilled storage
- −0.5 to +6 °C for vegetables, +4 to +6 °C for fish
- 230 kg of flake ice per 24 h
- 8.6 kW peak solar output recorded on site
Dimensions, temperatures, products: in 2 minutes, our calculator estimates the cooling capacity, the recommended panel thickness and the electricity consumption.
Our project in Mali

Solar R290 cold rooms – Kayes
A 60.2 m³ vegetable section (potatoes, onions) cooled by an R290 monoblock of about 8 kW, and a 25.3 m³ fish section cooled by an R290 monoblock of about 4 kW. Roof-mounted Rivacold monoblocks, a Ziegra R290 ice machine, ground-mounted solar panels, a hybrid inverter and a backup generator. Accepted on 30 June 2025.
What we build in Mali
- Cold rooms and cold stores for fruit and vegetables, potatoes and onions.
- Frozen cold rooms for meat, poultry and fish.
- Solar cold rooms for cooperatives and sites with a poor grid connection.
- Ice machines and ice plants for fish preservation.
- Freezing tunnels and insulated panels.
Propane refrigeration, with GIZ
In Mali, Afric Froid works with GIZ’s Proklima programme on propane (R290) installations, a natural refrigerant with near-zero global warming potential. In Kayes, each room has its own R290 monoblock, and energy comes first from the sun, with a generator as backup.
Afric Froid has delivered other R290 installations with GIZ in West and East Africa: a solar cold room for a cooperative in Ndioum, Senegal, two slaughterhouses in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and six solar refrigerated containers in Ethiopia.
