Ice machines

Industrial ice machines: how they work, benefits and applications

Ice machines: in many sectors across Africa, and in Côte d’Ivoire in particular, demand for industrial ice keeps growing. Whether for food processing, fishing, hospitality or retail, industrial ice machines are an essential solution.

An industrial refrigeration specialist for more than 30 years, Afric Froid designs and installs robust, high-performance equipment for every need.

How does an industrial ice machine work?

Closed refrigeration cycle

At the heart of the system is a closed refrigeration cycle in which a refrigerant circulates continuously.
The refrigerant goes through several physical stages (compression, condensation, expansion, evaporation) to produce cooling in a stable, controlled way. This sealed loop prevents any refrigerant loss and ensures the machine’s energy efficiency and durability.

Refrigerant compression and expansion

The refrigerant is first compressed by a compressor, which raises its temperature. It is then cooled in a condenser and expanded suddenly into an evaporator.
This expansion causes a sharp drop in temperature that absorbs heat from the water and freezes it. The process is automated and precise, ensuring ice production that is uniform.

Water freezing

Heat exchange in the evaporator removes heat from the water, which turns into ice. The freezing system is designed to work quickly with consistent quality, even under heavy use.
This stage determines the shape and texture of the ice produced.

Types of ice produced

Depending on industrial or commercial needs, Afric Froid offers several types of ice machines in Côte d’Ivoire that can produce:

  • chip ice, ideal for preserving food;
  • flake ice, often used in the fishing and chemical industries;
  • block ice, suited to long-distance transport;
  • or ice plates for specific applications that require a smooth surface.

Continuous production

The equipment is designed to run 24 hours a day without interruption, ensuring regular production that meets client requirements. Continuous operation is essential for sectors such as food processing, fishing and cold-chain logistics.

High capacity, low consumption

Afric Froid industrial ice machines are optimised to produce several tonnes of ice per day while cutting energy consumption by up to 30%, thanks to high-performance components and smart temperature control systems.

Reliability in tropical environments

Robust and built with anti-corrosion materials, these machines are specially suited to West African climates, where temperature and humidity can be challenging. They are designed to resist wear and heat-related failures and to work efficiently even in the hottest areas.

The benefits of Afric Froid ice machines

  • Energy efficiency : our equipment saves up to 30% in energy thanks to latest-generation components and smart control systems.
  • Robustness and long life : built with corrosion-resistant materials, our machines are designed to last in demanding industrial environments.
  • Simplified maintenance : our after-sales service provides regular maintenance and remote monitoring of every unit installed.
  • Production flexibility : we offer models for different quantities, ice shapes and specific applications.

Applications

Industrial ice machines are used in many sectors:

  • Food industry : for fast cooling of perishable products and maintaining the cold chain.
  • Fishing and aquaculture : to preserve fish as soon as it leaves the water, ensuring freshness and quality.
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry : some applications require fast, controlled cooling.
  • Retail : for supermarkets, hypermarkets and wholesale markets.
  • Hotels and catering : ice for culinary or decorative use, particularly in coastal areas.
